Demetris Mesimeris (Cyprus)

Demetris Mesimeris is a composer, performer, and creator born in Nicosia. His ability to fuse tradition and modernity gives his sound a distinctive character.

Coming from a music-loving family, he studied in the English city of Cambridge. His pieces combine elements of art song, rock, and folk tradition, as well as rebetiko (a Greek musical genre with roots in the 19th century). He does so, however, with modern sounds, lyrics, melodies, and orchestrations. The Cypriot artist has taken part in numerous live performances, concerts with renowned figures from the Greek music scene, tributes, and television music programs. He is also a founding member of the group Makrydromos and a member of the rock band Prospectus.

Cypriot Greek is a dialectal variety of Modern Greek spoken mainly on the island of Cyprus. It is closely related to Standard Greek but has its own phonetic, lexical, and grammatical features that make it clearly distinctive and recognizable. It is the variety spoken daily by Greek Cypriots. However, Greek is the official language and the one used in schools, the media, and public administration. This creates situations of diglossia: Standard Greek is used in formal contexts, while the dialect is used in informal situations.
